Tehran (Zero News 804) The 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Shaheed Ali Khamenei, has been appointed as the country’s new Supreme Leader. According to Iranian state media, the Assembly of Experts voted to elect a new leader, in which Mojtaba Khamenei received the majority support, and Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as Iran’s third leader.
The newly elected Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, will lead Iran’s highest political and religious office, and his influence on the country’s domestic and foreign policies will be significant. State media has called the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader a historic decision. Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appealed to the nation to maintain unity and the Iranian people to pledge loyalty to the new Supreme Leader, saying that national unity and solidarity are essential in the current circumstances.
According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei has been considered an influential figure in the Supreme Leader's inner circle for decades and is also said to have close ties with the Revolutionary Guards. He has never openly discussed succession.
Secretary-General of Iran's National Security Council Ali Larijani has said that the Assembly of Experts chose the new Supreme Leader despite threats and attacks. He said that in the current sensitive situation, a new leader can guide the country, and that the Iranian people should remain united under the new Supreme Leader. The leadership of the Iranian Armed Forces pledged loyalty to the new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and said that they are ready to implement the new Supreme Leader's statement.
